Pathanamthitta, the thirteenth revenue district of Keralam, was officially formed on November 1, 1982, with its headquarters at Pathanamthitta. Carved out from parts of the erstwhile Quilon, Alleppey, and Idukki districts, it spans an area from the Western Ghats down to the low-lying rice fields of Alappuzha. The region’s name combines “Pathanam” and “Thitta,” signifying an array of houses by a riverbank, and its territory was historically connected with the Pandalam reign and the Pandya kingdom.
Following the integration of Travancore and Cochin and the subsequent formation of Kerala in 1956, Pathanamthitta eventually achieved status as an independent administrative district in 1982.
Following the integration of Travancore-Cochin and the formation of Kerala state, the region continued to thrive as a key administrative, cultural, and spiritual landmark.
